Our diverse community of students comes together from various non-traditional backgrounds to learn, reskill, and unite around a shared goal to break into tech sales as an SDR.
As Flockjay charts our path forward in the workplace, it is with the utmost pride that we share the stories of our Tech Fellows, both current and alumni. We think it’s important for our mission-aligned hiring partners seeking to strengthen and diversify their sales teams to learn more about where our elite students come from. They are ready to make an undeniably positive impact.
Meet Stephanie Sakoda, a Flockjay Tech Fellow from our eighth class and current SDR for hire. She shared a few details about her journey with us below. Her sales trainers had this to share:
“Stephanie is a very detail-oriented person which reflects positively in her work. She has displayed a highly consistent level of performance in the program. She shows initiative in developing new ideas and ways to improve.”
What did life look like before you found Flockjay?
Before Flockjay, I spent the last several years working on a creative writing project at Stanford.
If I wasn’t writing, I took other classes, like Jane McGonigal’s class, How To Think Like A Futurist, which I highly recommend to anyone in the Bay area that also identifies as a Technocrat.
I’ve also been working on a passion project on the side, a website I founded, https://www.
Above all that, I am a mother to two small children, a six-year-old and a one-year-old. I have been very fortunate to be in a “parenting pause” and dedicate so much time to raising them, but once I finished my writing goals, I knew I was ready to reenter the workforce. It’s so challenging for parents, but especially women, to come back after a long break, so I jumped at the opportunity to join the Flockjay program when the timing aligned to catch up with the rockstars who have already broken into tech.
What past accomplishments are you proud of?
I’m most proud of what I accomplished in my writing pursuits. As a Cherokee Native American, it’s in my DNA to tell a good story, but learning the fundamental skills to writing a good story is completely different. There were many days I thought “nobody is forcing you to do this…you can quit at any point.” Yet, I kept going and I now have a memoir I can shop around should I choose to take that path.
What excites you most about a future SDR role?
I’m most excited to join a team environment again and get outside of my comfort zone again. I am a naturally curious person who welcomes challenges and the opportunity to learn, not to mention competitive, so combining all of that and bringing value to a company really excites me.
Advice for someone who wants to break into tech?
Don’t hesitate, JUMP into Flockjay if the Universe brings it to your attention. It’s a signal that shouldn’t be passed on if you’re like me and have been peering at tech on the outside, but wanting to play on the inside. You will feel uncomfortable and that’s a good thing because it means you’re taking a risk and betting on yourself. In my experience, intellectual curiosity has never failed me and paid dividends in the longterm for being willing to keep a student mentality.
