Meet SDR for Hire Melina Adragna

Our diverse community of students comes together from various non-traditional backgrounds to learn, reskill, and unite around a shared goal to break into tech sales as an SDR. It is with the utmost pride that we share their stories with incoming Tech Fellows, in addition to our mission-aligned hiring partners seeking to strengthen and diversify their sales teams with elite candidates.

Meet Melina Adragna, a Flockjay Tech Fellow from our seventh class and current SDR for hire. She shared a few details about her journey with us below. Her sales trainers had this to share:

“Melina is extremely hard-working and always gives 100 percent. She is genuinely driven to be a great SDR and always loves supporting her flockmates! Her “can do anything” mentality made it an absolute pleasure to work with her in class! Any company will be lucky to have her on their team!”

What did life look like before you found Flockjay?

I mostly grew up in a Latinx community in East Los Angeles, which connected me with the work ethic of my neighbors, including the ice cream cart vendors, the elote man, and the tamale lady. Being raised by an Italian father and Mexican mother blessed me with a sort of empathetic assertiveness that lent itself well to my pursuit of opera. I graduated in Fall 2019 with a degree in Vocal Performance in opera from Bob Cole Conservatory of Music.

What began first as a means of escape from the turmoils of adolescence, evolved into a means of escape for others (those in my audiences). I developed the vocal and theatrical skills to perform in grand productions, including months and years of learning French, Italian, and German to a level of convincing fluency. Complete commitment to my training and performance gave audiences a successful passage to a different world, a memorable story through art and song. Performing opera introduced me to the concept of giving back to others what I’ve been given. It is one of my personal bridges to the rest of humanity.

To finance college and ease the burden for my parents, I got a job as a sales associate for Paradis, a Danish ice cream shop. It wasn’t a typical job search; I first fell in love with their product and mission, developed a relationship with the owners, helped promote their business on social media, and only after I realized tuition was not going to be cheap did I ask if they had openings. This job was where I discovered the joy of selling. It wasn’t about the money. I reveled in conversations with customers, occasionally listening to their life stories, and was elated when I was able to help them find the flavor they didn’t know they wanted.

The pandemic of 2020 forced me to re-evaluate my career options. I needed a means to some financial stability for myself and my family. I stumbled upon Flockjay’s sales training program by chance and applied sheerly based on their mission statement. I quickly found comfort in the sales part and discovered my love of the tech part through intense research and discussions.

Now more than ever, I’m eager to start a new chapter exploring the art of tech sales as an SDR!

What past accomplishments are you proud of?

I’d say what I’m most proud of throughout my career is when I worked both as a soloist and as a team section leader for St. Matthews Church. I was able to combine my various vocal abilities and my love for helping people as I led 20 senior vocalists, outlining vocal methods, and resolving sensitive vocal issues. This not only saved one hour every week of rehearsal time, but my approach to teamwork established trust within the choir.

I am also proud of how I marketed our church’s recitals. I cold-called our contact list and marketed via social media and went door-to-door to local music studios to source prospects.  This increased attendance by 70 percent, which contributed to our church’s scholarship funds. I worked alongside two pianists for two months in order to raise $5,000 for students pursuing music education.

Reflecting on these experiences, I discovered a lot of my musical background relates to my skills in sales. I’m passionate, curious, and tenacious. Whatever I set my mind to do, I do it.

What excites you most about a future SDR role?

I was born with an innate curiosity to pry, dig, and learn. As an opera singer, it worked perfectly when answering the “why” in order to convey the emotions and objectives of a character. But as a future SDR, I’m excited to openly exercise my curiosity when connecting with others to determine how my future companies’ products can help them.

Additionally, I’m eager to start working as an SDR because more and more companies within the tech industry are supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion into their core values. I believe diversity is integral to success. Lastly, having a career where my salary mirrors the amount of effort I put into my work is something that excites me as well.

As a future SDR, I’m eager to begin this adventure of continuous growth, participating in an inclusive environment, and begin generating financial security for myself and my family.

In 2019, Flockjay Founder & CEO Shaan Hathiramani heard that an early employee from Carta was doing a series of interviews about the future of work for Forbes. Shaan read a handful of the articles and then emailed the author, Theo Miller. Without knowing that, Theo also cold emailed Flockjay the exact same week. That’s how aligned they were on the direction of the industry and the role Flockjay would play in the culture of tech.

Theo was the fifth employee at Carta, a late-stage fintech company in San Francisco that pioneered digital cap table management. Theo left Carta after four years to found a podcast company called Hit Start Media. Over the ensuing months, Shaan and Theo developed a show concept that ultimately went on hold due to the pandemic. But when Theo circled back with a new podcast series he had been developing, Shaan jumped at the opportunity to be the launch sponsor. Now, you can hear him share knowledge in the first episode!

What is the Techlash Podcast About?

Techlash is a podcast about elevating consciousness in tech. The word gained prominence due to the rage many of us felt in response to the Cambridge Analytica scandal at Facebook, interference with the 2016 election, and other violations of the public trust that were perpetrated by large tech companies that we had come to idealize since the advent of the iPhone.

The series is co-hosted by Theo and his former co-worker at Carta, Zibbie Nwokah, who started shortly after him and was instrumental in building the business through law firm partnerships. Zibbie has also been a fireside chat guest speaker here at Flockjay. Together, they analyze interviews with early-stage founders and influencers that are doing good in tech, not those who just hold aspirations of changing the world; we’re talking about progressive founders that are having an impact right now.

There are a handful of recurring themes you’ll hear about on Techlash from week-to-week. Socioeconomic diversity in the tech industry, building for underserved groups, providing access to the industry, user privacy, income share agreements, and creating a better safety net are just some of the topics that will be explored in the coming months.

Meet Glenn Jones, a Flockjay Tech Fellow from our seventh class and current SDR for hire. He shared a few details about his journey with us below. His sales trainers had this to share:

“Glenn Jones exudes positivity and is always looking to get better (so he does). His willingness to learn, coachability, and positive attitude made it an absolute pleasure to work with him in class. He would be a great addition to any sales team!”

What did life look like before you found Flockjay?

Born and raised in Oakland, Ca to a single mother, I watched her work multiple jobs to keep my two little siblings and me fed and housed. Watching her work hard day in and day out put a fire in me to be a go-getter; it really instilled that hustler’s mentality into me.

My community and urban surroundings came with built-in challenges and patterns, which I fueled into a passion for music and creative connection. I developed an entrepreneurial mindset that led me to co-found an indie record label, allowing me to continue pursuing an inspirational outlet and nurture my growth mindset. I carried that with me into the workforce. Using my passion for personal development, my coachability, and my drive, I grew from a warehouse worker to an Operations Supervisor for a Fortune 500 company.

When I’m not leading a shift of warehouse workers making sure the world gets their packages delivered intact and on time, I’m creating music and running the indie record label with my family. Now, charging full speed ahead, I want to give back to the community that raised me and create a non-profit that positively benefits fellow community members exposed to urban street life by allowing them to access more opportunities for creative expression.

What past accomplishments are you proud of?

My time in leadership reshaped the culture at my service center and the proof was in the pudding. I was awarded by the company’s VP for being a part of the culture shift that created the following results:

  • 65% increase in productivity
  • 30% drop in accidents and injuries
  • $250-$1k generated per week in new/existing accounts

My biggest work-related personal accomplishment has to be training a friend of mine (a warehouse worker on my team) who was eager to join leadership but kept being passed over when opportunities came up. He recently accepted an offer and we are working side by side as Operations Supervisors!

What are you most excited about in a future SDR role?

As a musician and Co-leader of a record label, I know when it’s crunch time I need to kick it into overdrive. I honored deadlines for album releases, booked studio sessions, and balanced the creative aspect of it to remain fresh and competitive in the music market! I’m ready to bring that tenacity into a future SDR role. And who knows, maybe even come up with some witty jingles for the team while I’m at it.

Advice for someone who wants to break into tech?

Find a training program that truly values you being your true authentic self! A program that is founded on support, compassion, empathy, a dash of tough love, some seriously knowledgeable SDR experts, and promotes diversity… (*whispers* Flockjay). Once you’re in it, commit to growth, and do not be afraid to be uncomfortable.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” – Neale Donald Walsch

Meet SDR for Hire Kirsten Koppe

Our diverse community of students comes together from various non-traditional backgrounds to learn, reskill, and unite around a shared goal to break into tech sales as an SDR. It is with the utmost pride that we share their stories with incoming Tech Fellows, in addition to our mission-aligned hiring partners seeking to strengthen and diversify their sales teams with elite candidates.

Meet Kirsten Koppe, a Flockjay Tech Fellow from our seventh class and current SDR for hire. She shared a few details about her journey with us below. Her sales trainers had this to share:

“Kirsten stays calm under pressure and builds trust quickly with her professionalism and industry savvy. She is sharp, a quick learner, and loves a challenge. Kirsten is a sales professional who’s ready to make an impact on Day 1.”

What did life look like before you found Flockjay?

I’m a Southern California native and went to UCLA. After graduating, I decided to follow my passion and pursue a career as a professional dancer.  This unconventional path was full of ups and downs, but it taught me how to push past rejection and how to use little wins as motivation to keep going and to work harder every day.  Finally, my perseverance paid off and I got in front of the right people and made the right connections to launch a successful career in the dance industry.

As a dancer, health and fitness had always been a huge part of my life, so I transitioned into the wellness industry and became an instructor at SoulCycle. For six years, I led the pack in both Los Angeles and Chicago and played an integral role in expanding both markets from the ground up.

I had wanted to get into tech sales for a while and leverage those business development skills I had honed, but I didn’t know how to make the jump without having traditional sales experience. Simultaneously, COVID-19 hit, negatively impacting the fitness industry, and I found Flockjay. It truly felt like the stars had aligned for me and I found my answer!

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

My road to success as a professional dancer was not an easy one. I faced a lot of “no’s” before I finally got the biggest “yes” I could have ever imagined when I landed a role as a dancer for Katy Perry.  This huge win jump-started my career, and I went on to appear in numerous films, TV shows, and several national commercial campaigns.

At SoulCycle, I was given an opportunity for advancement to relocate to Chicago to open the very first SoulCycle market in the Midwest. I knew I would have to start from scratch and build a whole new book of business in a city in which I knew no one, but I was up for the challenge.

My Chicago team and I developed creative strategies to prospect new customers and to build a robust client network in our new city. We worked relentlessly to meet our quotas and it paid off.

In just two and a half years, Chicago became the third-highest volume market behind New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area as a direct result of my hard work.

What most excites you about a future SDR role?

To be honest, I’m most excited about having a job where my compensation directly reflects my hard work. My favorite part about being an instructor at SoulCycle was the competition aspect and the performance-based compensation structure, but unfortunately, the ceiling was very low and there was no opportunity for growth. I’m really excited to get into an SDR role where I will have more opportunities financially and professionally.

Advice for someone who wants to break into tech?

It’s all about that growth mindset!  You’re either winning or you’re learning, so my advice to anyone who wants to break into tech, especially if you don’t have traditional sales experience, is to look at setbacks as gifts and use them as learning opportunities to keep getting better.

His willingness to learn and positive attitude made it an absolute pleasure to work him with in class! Any company will be lucky to have him on their team!”

What did life look like before you found Flockjay?

I was born and raised in Belgrade, Serbia where I earned my law degree. After a decade-long instability in my native country, I wanted a better life for myself. In 2009, I moved to New York City, where I was fortunate enough to gather my sales and customer-facing experience through various industries. I realized that I especially enjoyed the tech sales aspects of my job, whether it was performing discovery with antique dealers through a web portal, or building rapport with insurance policyholders. I also wanted to continue learning and was able to enroll in Yeshiva University, Cardozo Law School intellectual property law program.

As a lifelong tennis athlete, I believe that my competitive spirit kept me going through all the difficulties in my life. I competed in high school and law school in Serbia. I got my tennis coach and referee certification in Serbia.

A few fun facts: My friends call me walking Jukebox as I remember a lot of lyrics. I also love playing board games and computer games. I grew up playing D&D and Warhammer, love strategic simulations, and single-player role video games. My favorite video games are Total War, Elder Scrolls, Witcher 3, and Civilization.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

Some past accomplishments I am most proud of include:

  • Living and working in NYC for 5 years and in LA for 6 years. I was determined to succeed in becoming an American! I had to be able to learn how to survive with no help from friends or family, how to deal with my finances and make new friends.
  • Managing and reviving a West Hollywood tennis location which saw an increase of 300% in total customer number and 4x increases in group classes over the period of one year.
  • Speaking German fluently, a language that I love and is one of the most difficult ones to master. It requires hard work, determination, and curiosity.
  • Getting my master’s degree in IP law, which honed my fast reading and writing skills in English.
  • Getting accepted into Flockjay which gave me the hope to finally be able to get into tech sales.

What most excites you about a future SDR role?

Learning about new tech products and software and applying my sales knowledge and skills to help businesses increase their value. I’m excited about setting targets for myself and working to reach them. I look forward to creating long term relationships with my clients and becoming someone they can trust.

Advice for someone who wants to break into tech?

Stay curious! Set a goal and go get it! Tech is constantly developing and it is our future, so there is space for you too! The only thing that is standing between you and your dream job in tech sales is your attitude.
