What did life look like before you found Flockjay?

My life before Flockjay consisted of working on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as the Residential Manager for Chinatown Community Development.

Though I love my work, I sought out Flockjay under the recommendation of a close friend and Flockjay employee. I sought a new path, a new career in which I would put my experience in sales to better use. When my friend suggested that I apply for Flockjay, I was immediately intrigued at the hopes of aligning myself with more knowledge to be successful.

What past accomplishments are you proud of?

In 2016, I opened my own catering company. My passion for food, hospitality and love for the community allowed me to touch the hearts and bellies of many. This experience taught me how to start up, operate and manage my own business.

In 2018, I began working in women’s health, promoting holistic alternative health treatments such as V Steam, Non-Invasive Lipo, and Body Contouring.

In 2019, I became a 1st generation home owner.

In 2021, I earned a 5 years Certificate of Service for my work with Chinatown Community all while putting myself through Flockjay.

What excites you most about a future SDR role?

When I think about my future in an SDR role, I’m super excited to finally showcase my potential. I am excited to break down barriers as a strong black female stepping into the sales world. I look to align myself with a company that I truly can stand by.

My hunger to learn and advise burns so fiercely that I know that this is the path for me. I am excited to grow, travel and advance. I know that the possibilities for me are endless. Most importantly, I am excited to make lasting relationships with people from all over the world.

Advice for someone who wants to break into tech?

If I had any advice, I would say be dedicated. Be fearless. Be curious. Be hungry. Be unapologetic and don’t let anything get in your way. Be your authentic self.

What did life look like before you found Flockjay?

I have been in the tech space since I was 16-years-old, participating in different tech and entrepreneurship programs, and even becoming the 2017 Global Young Entrepreneur presented by the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE).

Prior to Flockjay, I was the lead program director for an edTech start-up called PilotCity. I was able to connect hundreds of high school students to high-growth tech industries such as AI, IoT, Drones, and Autonomous Driving; I did this by providing pilot project challenges for students to receive a project-based work experience in their classroom.

As someone one who grew up in the tech arena, and comes from a long lineage of salespeople where I am a 4th generation salesperson, Flockjay was the perfect medium for me to bring two passionate worlds together to begin my career in tech sales.

What past accomplishments are you proud of?

I am proud to share that I:

  • Earned 2017 Global Young Entrepreneur of the Year
  • Developed an entire 6-week, high tech internship program from scratch for 40+ students working with 10+ different employers
  • Hosted a digital hackathon for our student users in responses to the pandemic closing the classrooms we operated in
  • Offered over 100 virtual internships in 2020
  • Learned the art of tactical empathy from former FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss (I took his master class)
  • Learned how to do Inbound & Outbound sales through Flockjay

What excites you most about a future SDR role?

In my future SDR role, I am excited about:

  • Creating a real impact in the world through selling products that make a difference
  • Pursuing my dream of being a top salesperson in my industry
  • Creating and building meaningful relationships
  • Starting at a position to practice the fundamentals of selling and grew to a salesperson that any organization can rely on to generate results

Advice for someone who wants to break into tech?

Go in with a high willingness to learn! There are so many amazing things happening in the world of tech and the start of your journey is where you begin to discover what truly interests you and aligns the most with your internal values. Find the type of work that will make you the happiest, and your potential to grow in that field will be forever unlimited.

Stephanie Sakoda Flockjay Tech Fellow Spotlight

Stephanie Sakoda Flockjay Tech Fellow Spotlight

Our diverse community of students comes together from various non-traditional backgrounds to learn, reskill, and unite around a shared goal to break into tech sales as an SDR.

As Flockjay charts our path forward in the workplace, it is with the utmost pride that we share the stories of our Tech Fellows, both current and alumni. We think it’s important for our mission-aligned hiring partners seeking to strengthen and diversify their sales teams to learn more about where our elite students come from. They are ready to make an undeniably positive impact.

Meet Stephanie Sakoda, a Flockjay Tech Fellow from our eighth class and current SDR for hire. She shared a few details about her journey with us below. Her sales trainers had this to share:

“Stephanie is a very detail-oriented person which reflects positively in her work. She has displayed a highly consistent level of performance in the program. She shows initiative in developing new ideas and ways to improve.”

What did life look like before you found Flockjay?

Before Flockjay, I spent the last several years working on a creative writing project at Stanford.

If I wasn’t writing, I took other classes, like Jane McGonigal’s class, How To Think Like A Futurist, which I highly recommend to anyone in the Bay area that also identifies as a Technocrat.

I’ve also been working on a passion project on the side, a website I founded, https://www.lowcountryhighstyle.com, that was only an idea seven years ago, but has now grown into so much more.

Above all that, I am a mother to two small children, a six-year-old and a one-year-old. I have been very fortunate to be in a “parenting pause” and dedicate so much time to raising them, but once I finished my writing goals, I knew I was ready to reenter the workforce. It’s so challenging for parents, but especially women, to come back after a long break, so I jumped at the opportunity to join the Flockjay program when the timing aligned to catch up with the rockstars who have already broken into tech.

What past accomplishments are you proud of?

I’m most proud of what I accomplished in my writing pursuits. As a Cherokee Native American, it’s in my DNA to tell a good story, but learning the fundamental skills to writing a good story is completely different. There were many days I thought “nobody is forcing you to do this…you can quit at any point.” Yet, I kept going and I now have a memoir I can shop around should I choose to take that path.

What excites you most about a future SDR role?

I’m most excited to join a team environment again and get outside of my comfort zone again. I am a naturally curious person who welcomes challenges and the opportunity to learn, not to mention competitive, so combining all of that and bringing value to a company really excites me.

Advice for someone who wants to break into tech?

Don’t hesitate, JUMP into Flockjay if the Universe brings it to your attention. It’s a signal that shouldn’t be passed on if you’re like me and have been peering at tech on the outside, but wanting to play on the inside. You will feel uncomfortable and that’s a good thing because it means you’re taking a risk and betting on yourself. In my experience, intellectual curiosity has never failed me and paid dividends in the longterm for being willing to keep a student mentality.

Baxter is hard-working, dedicated, and goal-oriented. He works at perfecting his skills 24/7 and achieves his goals by never stopping, finding others to practice with, and always asking for feedback.”

What did life look like before you found Flockjay?

Growing up in San Francisco, watching the tech industry establish itself and transform the city into the hub of innovation always captivated me. Seeing the incorporation of technological advancements into our lives made me consistently wonder “What will be the next step towards discovering and uncovering the possibilities and the unknown?”

Being a lifelong athlete, not only did I develop a highly competitive personality, but also discovered a lot about what it truly was to be successful in a team dynamic. Through competitions, I learned how rewarding winning was, and also the beneficial lessons you learn through defeats and how to handle them.

Before Flockjay, I spent my time serving as my grandmother’s caretaker and taking classes at CCSF, continuing my education towards a marketing degree after studying at DePaul University. During that same time, I worked part-time at a local bakery, serving upwards of 100 customers daily. This position is where I came to discover my passion for sales. Using sales skills like building lasting relationships with customers, conversing, and conducting discovery techniques like BANT, solution selling, and rapport building.

What past accomplishments are you proud of?

As a dyslexic thinker, I faced a lot of moments of adversity, challenges, and setbacks to be where I am today. Each of those moments contributed to creating my character and gave me the strength to never quit. I worked through the moments of doubt throughout school and achieved acceptance into DePaul University, my top choice college.

I learned that having the resilience to step back up to the plate the next day and push even harder is not always easy, but it’s imperative for success.

I am proud of all the insights and knowledge I’ve gained and expanded upon through my time at the bakery and throughout Flockjay’s training program.

I am also proud to have made it to where I am today, and eager to take all that I’ve learned and apply it to new challenges as I embark on the next chapter of my life.

What excites you most about a future SDR role?

I am most excited about building new relationships and connections, taking on new challenges, immersing myself in the world of tech, mastering the art of sales, and providing solutions to help eliminate pain points that others are facing.

Meet Alexander Sosa, a Flockjay Tech Fellow from our eighth class and current SDR for hire. He shared a few details about his journey with us below. His sales trainers had this to share:

“Alex shows constant support, empathy, and leadership. When not in class, you can find him on Slack helping others. He has the unique ability to show people how to problem solve without telling them exactly how to do something resulting in his teammates learning. His willingness to look outside of himself and make those around him better is one of the most valuable contributions Alex has made in our program.”

What did life look like before you found Flockjay?

Life before Flockjay was a challenge; in my local area, the main opportunities to get into a tech were only coding boot camps or programs for other highly technical positions, areas that didn’t fit my exact interests of tech and business combined.

At my previous employer, I was trying to get into sales, but over half the sales staff was laid off during my time there. I went back to the drawing board to try and find ways to get into the tech industry/sales field and found Flockjay through a tech website I frequented.

After applying, I was afforded the opportunity (by qualifying in the top 7% of applicants) to be accepted into the program. Flockjay has helped me master my sales skills and add more valuable experience for a future employer.

I have experience in sales and customer service that have taken me far, but I have more goals I am determined to accomplish. Hard work is something that is instilled in me and it’s a work ethic I take with me everywhere I am and in everything I do, even outside of work.

I like to prove myself by mastering job responsibilities in every environment. Then, improving anything I can in my work surroundings to bring more value and efficiency to a team.

What past accomplishments are you proud of?

My Flockjay experience has allowed me to accomplish goals in various areas that are important to me.

Those areas are:

Being a top performer: My efforts are reflective in the results of the program’s metrics

Making genuine relationships: Creating connections with teammates through group work and assistance

Finding a need and solving for it: Whether doing discovery to qualify or disqualify future tech fellow recruits or meeting the needs of a teammate, I pride myself in finding a solution to a problem

Flockjay has allowed me to stay curious, but also exhibit my resourcefulness to go find answers, be independent, but also collaborate with my team.

Nobody can be successful on their own, it takes a team of people who are all focused on similar goals and who want the best for each other. Flockjay provided that environment. We walk together, we flock together.

Most importantly, I couldn’t have any success without that team that helped me get to this point. My trainers, TAs, and success team have all played a major part in helping me get to where I am. I appreciate the training and mentorship they’ve given me. #GRATEFUL

What excites you most about a future SDR role?

I am most excited about exceeding sales quotas and selling a product I believe in, mastering my product knowledge, helping teammates, and giving back.
